He was 80.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA <a href=\"https:\/\/thestatlerbrothers.com\/\">statement<\/a> on the band\u2019s website reads, \u201cHe is and will always be loved by his family, friends and millions of fans. His singing, his songwriting and his comedy made generations happy. He was a founding member of the singing group that gradually evolved into The Statler Brothers, which took its name from a brand of facial tissues. The quartet traveled frequently with Johnny Cash starting in 1964 and enjoyed a major crossover single with \u201cFlowers on the Wall\u201d in 1965.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" class=\"wp-image-2524\" src=\"https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598-676x450.jpg 676w, https:\/\/cmni.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/img_5598-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHowever the Statler Brothers truly hit their stride with their first charting single for Mercury Records, 1970\u2019s \u201cBed of Rose\u2019s,\u201d which was written by Harold Reid. He also co-wrote \u201cThe Class of \u201957\u201d with his younger brother and bandmate Don Reid. That 1972 single won a Grammy and they continued to chart on Mercury Records through 1990.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe band cultivated a comic presence on record and on the road with their alter egos, Lester \u201cRoadhog\u201d Moran &amp; His Cadillac Cowboys. But as the Statler Brothers, their biggest radio hits include 1978\u2019s \u201cDo You Know You Are My Sunshine\u201d (their first No. 1, also written by Don and Harold Reid) as well as \u201cElizabeth,\u201d \u201cMy Only Love,\u201d and \u201cToo Much on My Heart,\u201d all No. 1 singles written by bandmate Jimmy Fortune. Philip Balsley rounded out the most recognizable lineup of the Statler Brothers, formed after Lew Dewitt\u2019s departure due to ill health in 1982.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<iframe  id=\"_ytid_84907\"  width=\"676\" height=\"507\"  data-origwidth=\"676\" data-origheight=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uDs2WGhPDHQ?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=1&autohide=2&hl=en_US&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Statler Brothers charted 66 singles on the <em>Billboard<\/em> country airplay chart between 1965 and 1990. They received nine CMA Awards for Vocal Group of the Year and two ACM awards in the same category. The group\u2019s Top 10 singles co-written by the Reid brothers include \u201cThe Official Historian on Shirley Jean Berrell,\u201d \u201cHow to Be a Country Star,\u201d \u201c(I\u2019ll Love You Even) Better Than I Did Then,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Wait on Me,\u201d \u201cWhatever,\u201d \u201cGuilty,\u201d and \u201cSweeter and Sweeter.\u201d\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWhile they were embraced by Nashville, the group kept their home base in Staunton, Virginia. After their hit streak at radio came to an end, the Statler Brothers starred in a highly-rated TNN variety series from 1991 to 1997.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe band retired from the road in 2002.
